 One man's trash...
Author: Kontragirl

Yesterday I was staying after school to help clean up the storage sheds. I found an old Selmer rosewood contralto clarinet! I asked the band director if I could take it home and mess around with it. He was like, sure, get it out of my face, I bet it's just a piece of garbage.

I didn't care, I took it home anyway. I found it to be in virtually perfect condition, not a crack, corks look new, pads look great, it could use some polishing, and most importantly, it feels and sounds great!

So now everyone go and check those storage lockers!

Off my topic, I made all-state! Not much of an accomplishment for contra, but I can still have bragging rights.

Who put the clarinet in the shed. Did he even see the horn? Lucky you. Enjoy.

Is that a four leaf clover you're wearing these days, Kontragirl ?

Those Selmer Rosewoods are beautiful horns. Nothing, and I mean nothing looks like them on stage, and that warm tone is just what a contra should be IMO. Have fun!

If the school thinks this is such a lousy clarinet, maybe they'd like to save some space by selling it to you! Ask what they want for it, instead of making an offer. That way, if you get them to name a price first, then your conscience is clean if they name a ridiculously low figure.

I'm going to try to see if I can take it off their hands. Even if I can't get it (i.e. the band director realizes it's a great horn, and wants to use that one in the future) I can at least feel better knowing I saved a great horn.

As far as I know, my band director put it in the shed because no one was using it. I had heard a rumor that we had another contralto "laying around" somewhere, but the only one I'd ever seen was a paper clip LeBlanc that needed some serious help.

I've never sounded better, and I've never had more fun playing downbeats, or counting rests as I'm thinking of how lucky I am to have found a great horn. We'll see what happens, I'll keep you posted.

wow! Our EEb Selmer rosewood was stolen a while back. We placed an order and placed no. 16 on the waiting list. We got one fairly soon on bid. Perhaps we got bumped up because I have been a Selmer clarinet clinician for years.

I am not sure of the exact figure on bid but it was around &1200.00. This is not some kind of a toy or frill. It serves a very useful and important place in any clarinet choir or band setting.

The contra bass and contra alto in our wind ensemble and clarinet choir is also known as "contra-girl".

Sorry I meant to say, $12,000.00

This is not a toy. Love and protect it.

Hi Kontragirl. Believe it or not, I've done exactly the same thing that you have in my school's stoage cupboard.
I found 4 B-Flat clarinets, and a load of other Brass intruments, some I'd never seen, and that was about it.
I wasn't half as lucky as you.
In fact, not even that.
Some of the B-Flats maybe could be tweaked into fine instruments, but other than that, the instruments smelt worse than the cupboard itself!
I'm happy for you and extremely envious!!!
I would not bother telling the band ledar myself - no, I probably would, I'd just say it was old and rusty and that I wanted to keep it anyway.
oh, Do clarinets rust by the way?
Catcha later,
DLE.
