Wondering if any of you here on the BB have played this and have any thoughts or comments about the piece. My quintet is working on this and while the latter part is pretty straight forward, the beginning section has me a little stumped. We are capable of playing it, but the point of the music is getting by me at this point.
So if you have any impressions of this music, please share your thoughts. If you aren't familiar with it then have a listen to these guys playing it:

It's interesting stuff actually, whilst it not my cup of tea necessarily. More of a tone poem do you think?
I thought the La Ta Winds High School Wind Ensemble did a good job of it too, on what is probably a most difficult piece to execute - like it or no.

Thanks for the reply. Tone poem. I like that. It's sort of a mix of so much. Maybe that's what is bothering me. And yes, the HS group did a really nice job of it, although, I don't know why they used a sax.

The piece was written for a consortium of three wind quintets; my quintet, the Dakota Wind Quintet, was one of them. The ending portion is a decription of a traditional New Orleans funeral; first, you mourn the loss of your loved one, then you celebrate their life. The beginning is a bit more esoteric. I see it as a description of the marshes/swamps in the areas around the city. The key to the opening, in my experience, is to shape the fast runs, and not make them too heavy.
