 Inherited clarinet
Author: Emdolisha

Hi,

I'm looking for some info on a clarinet I have just inherited from my late great uncle.

After a bit of research I assume it is a simple-system/Albert system. There is a plate on the bell saying "Selmer, Gold Seal, LONDON". It is also stamped at the base of the lower joint & top of the upper joint "FOREIGN 1S01"

Any help gratefully received.

A branch of Selmer was founded in London around 1930 by Ben Davis. "Gold Seal" was one of their trade names. Allegedly the Gold Seal clarinets were made by Malerne in France. I suspect that since yours does not have "made in France" on it but simply "foreign" (a wonderfully british term often indicating, in those days, something generally suspect) it may actually be from somewhere else such as Czechoslovakia or possibly Germany. If it is a simple/albert it is likely early thirties as companies stopped producing them between the thirties and 1940, at least for the western europe and N.America markets.
I see these kind of horns on TASTMNBM from time to time in the $50 - 150 range
