 Higher notes than C
Author: Jonathan
Date:   2001-01-06 18:18

Someone told me that it is possible to play higher notes than the C (the one with two forefingers). Does anyone here know how to play the C#, D, etc?
What's the higher note someone ever played?
Thanks
Jonathan

Jonathan -
Someone may, probably will, throw bottle caps at me for this but, I'm going to say it anyway:
When you get up that high - use anything that works for you. You'll just have to try different fingerings [ make them up :] until you find something that works sorta consistently for you. Someone may have some good suggestions for you to try but there are no 'standards' that far out of the instruments 'normal' range.
In my opinion, it's not a pleasing sound.

There have been players go higher than the C just 5th ledger line above the staff. However, I can't really see any need for them. Notes this high are rather unpleasant on the clarinet. Even the B and C are very difficult to make sound good. Leave higher pitches to the piccolos.

. . . or get the little Ab sopranino clarinet that iju has for sale on ebay. At that pitch, it's just getting warmed up !

(search for 'sopranino' on ebay to find it)

I saw that itty-bitty horn on e-bay. Wow. It's amazing to see one that small.

Hi Jonathon,

The Thurston/Frank clarinet method has a fingering chart that covers notes up to Eb on pages 166&167 of the 1979 edition.
