Hi all,
I have just started playing clarinet again after a 6 year break and since I'm not at school any more and therefore don't have a teacher to keep me right with regards to tuning, i decided to purchase a tuner today. The gentleman in the store reccommended a JOYO JT-12C tuner and told me to adjust the frequency to 439. When I got home I followed his instructions and played note "C" on my clarinet. However, the display on the tuner showed "A#"! Can my clarinet really be that out of tune? And if so, how do I go about fixing it? I play a Buffet E13.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Nic

The note "c" on a Bb clarinet produces a Bb ( A#) so your clarinet is correct.
The tuning should really be to A=440 but difference between 440 - 439 is quite minmal.

many tuners available nowadays have the capacity to switch their displays according to the instrument you're playing. So with a transposing instrument such as a Bb clarinet or trumpet or whatever you simply select the appropriate tuning for your instrument and then the display will show your tuning according to the music you're playing ie. if you're playing transposed music showing a C, then the tuner will also show a C and how in-tune you are.
Cheers, Danny
