what kind of mouthpiece would you recommend for me? i play in the orchestra pit, the community band and the school band. im playing right now the mouthpiece that came with my clarinet, i love it, but idk if it's good. its FE Olds like my clarinet. its made of hard rod rubber. its says on the sight "with a Professional B-45 hard rod rubber mouthpiece" heres the link, scroll down the the NA40- http://feolds.com/descriptions/descripClarinet.htm#NA50VWP

let me know what you think ??

Trevor

If you like your current mouthpiece and it plays well for you then I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like your mouthpiece is modeled after the Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. I'm not a big fan of them myself but some people like them. If you think you'd like something better I'd suggest going to the local music shop and testing as many mouthpieces as they let you.

Even better, if you are studying with a teacher, get that person's recommendations of what mouthpiece might suit you.

Aside from the above "if it ain't broke don't fix it" style comment, I would say you can do much better than something in a b45 style.

I'm also positive that it is not made from rod rubber as that would cost more than the clarinet is worth. That's another topic though...

Generally, improved sound quality and ease of playing come with Vandorens' more traditional styles (5RV Lyre and closer). The B45 (and imitations) are very open and are not very friendly to the player.

Try some mouthpieces at your local store, they should have some vandorens in stock. If you don't find something you like better, then you can rest assured your current mouthpiece is good for you.
