I'm playing 2nd basset horn in this edition on Saturday (snow permitting) and wonder what your thoughts are if you've played it.
Just having a look through it and things looked fine until the Dies Irae which I don't recognise, same has to be said with the Tuba Mirum where I'm in on the third bar (see attachment) and get to play a bottom C in bar 18!

I've played this Chris on period basset horn and must say it's not my favourite. Also watch out for a altissimo Eb which is unison with the 2nd. I played 1st when I did this and remember the 2nds delight at the low C

There's two factors counting against making the rehearsal on time - Pompey are playing at home which means traffic chaos and there's the snow which means additional traffic chaos. I heard the church we're playing in isn't exactly warm either, so it could end up being a 430Hz performance!

Football's off - maybe the players didn't want the snow to mess up their hairdos!
Just reading an email about this concert (to find out what the dress code is) and found a bit that says:
"You might be interested to know there is a lecture at 6pm in the church by Richard Maunder, who prepared the OUP edition which we are performing."

Would love to know what he thought about when he decided on his version of the Mozart Req and why he wanted to. I personally prefer the Duncan Druce version which I was lucky to play on period instruments with Duncan leading. Me and the 2nd had some lovely basset horn moments.

He's not exactly a fan of Süssmayr - labelling him as a 'dim-witted pupil' and 'a weak student'.
The Süssmayr appendix was left out of this performance which is a shame as that has some lovely basset horn writing in it.
The biggest problem was the cold - the church was freezing even though the heating had been on since around 9am. I lost both throat Bbs during the rehearsal as they continually clogged up and the thumb/F# vent toneholes had water (not spit!) pouring out of them. I hope Buffet are aware of this problem and will in time fit all the keys on the back of the top joint with bushes to prevent water collecting and running from them. We both played RC Prestige basset horns (Nigel Salmon was the other player) and both suffered exactly the same trouble, though during the concert I kept the top end of the top joint and crook warm with both hands during bars rests, so that helped a lot as there were a lot of throat Bbs to be nervous about. Temperature was against all us wind players, just a shame it's only us wind players who are clued up about it. I only hope when I do this again in late January somewhere else they'll have better heating.
