Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can give me some names of some good flute and clarinet duets.... challenging but not really difficult.
And also if anyone can give me some names of some really good contemporary 20th century clarinet music. I want something thats new and exciting to play and if anyone can give me some help....i would appreciate it very much! Thank you!

Nikki -

About the 20th century clarinet piece(s):
-- how "outlandish"? (for want of a better word)
-- what degree of difficulty? (compared to, say, the Stravinsky)
-- accompanied?
-- short'n'sweet or major works?

Nikki,
If you go to the composition section and check by number of instruments, I think you'll find a long list of titles to check through. See what interests you there ...

I wrote a little piece...I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but it's definately challenging and accompined...I also have a horn/clarinet duet. You could probably do some part rotating there...it's more musical than techincal. Let me know if you want a listen.

Nikki -

please forgive this little bout of Oz flag-waving!! . . .here are five titles to look at; I gather they’re not hugely well-known outside Australia and therefore probably new to your audience.

The most appropriate one of these would be:

• Arthur BENJAMIN (1893 - 1960) - Le Tombeau de Ravel (1958) duration c14min
. . .“Valse-Caprices” - wonderful second-half-of-the-concert item - a real finger-buster for both players!

Others to think about:

• Miriam HYDE (b1913) - Sonata in F minor (1949) c16min
. . .musical language not entirely dissimilar to that of Benjamin (one of her teachers). Possibly at the “serious” end of what you’re seeking, but well worth investigating.

• Don BANKS (1923 - 1980) - Prologue, Night Piece and Blues for Two (1968) c6:30
. . .sort-of Seiber / Dallapiccola (two of his teachers) get jazzy! Not hugely difficult, very effective.

• Robert SMALLWOOD (b1958) - Trio Sonatina for Two Clarinets [oops!] and Piano (1976) c8:30
. . .has a particularly nice “bitter-sweet” slow section.

• Kent FARBACH (b1961) - Moods (1985) c8min
. . .three movements, “jazzy” harmonies, ends slowly and wistfully.

These are all available on cd - check ‘em out!!

regards - deebee
