I recently purchased a Legere bass clarinet reed primarily to have a consistent back-up reed. I'm wondering if anyone else experiences a buzzing sound while using Legere reeds and if there's anything that can be done to stop this from happening. There seems to be a bit of spit build-up on the inside of the reed when I play, but I don't think that this is the cause of the buzzing. Thanks for your help !

As a huge fan of the Legere, I admit to being biased in the following commentary.
**
Heidi,
I have found exactly the same problem with the Legere on my Bb clarinet.
This is likely condensation on the back side of the reed, as it won't absorb anything. It won't dry out, either.
Two things contribute to the migration of this condensate between the back of the reed and the table of your mouthpiece;
Capillary action draws it into the narrow gap created by the ligature being a little too snug.
The table may not be perfectly flat, creating a cavity.
When the back of my Legere gets wet, it is wild and uncontrollable at the deepest range.
I keep a piece of coffee filter paper handy, to slip down between the reed and mouthpiece without disassembling the works. Mellita coffee filters work well.
Please drop the Legere people a line, they seem responsive to this sort of problem.

There's been a lot of discussion of the Legere bass clarinet reeds on the Klarinet board over the last week or so You can search that board from the Sneezy home page. There's substantial disagreement, with professional bass players who love them and others who hate them. Apparently, Legere is still making improvements on them. His clarinet reeds had the same evolutionary process over a year or two after they were introduced.
Tenor sax reeds work well on bass clarinet. Have you tried a Legere tenor reed?
Best regards.
