Toughest Band Literature for Clarinet...
Author: Rob
Date: 1999-03-21 05:43

This is an interesting topic. What is the most challenging BAND literature you've had to play? Keeping in mind though that we are all differently skilled.

Here's mine (12th grade):

Fingal's Cave (solo)
Suite of Old American Dances (solo)

Probably the hardest thing I ever played (also in High School) was La Belle Helene (sorry, i don't remember the composer)--a technical killer! A close 2nd to that, was Poet and Peasant Overture by Von Suppe.
Another strange one for clarinet was Apocolyptic Dreams (also unsure of the composer on that one).

Last year, my ninth grade year, we played Molly on the Shore by Grainger. I don't know if it would be as challenging to me now, but last year, our section had a heck of time playing that. Technically and rhythmically it was very difficult. Somehow we pulled it off though. Very fun piece once you can play it. The whole thing is pretty much a big clarinet/woodwind feature.

Check out the extensive list of "graded" band music here on Sneezy in the Study section.

If I can remember that far back, Maybe Carmina Burana, or William Tell up to speed, (1st. Clar. on the violin part) or Pines of Rome as I recall was not that easy. Wisely, our band director(s) challenged us with things that suited our ability, and that would not embarrass the group. The solo part on Elsa's Procession was quite challenging at that experience level. Not fast, but very demanding. With many years of retrospect, most things were as they should be and were difficult to perform artistically.

I will include a few for different reasons:

Lincolnshire Posey(tuning)
Festive Overture(working up to speed)
Bum's Rush- a piece by Donald Grantham that is a technical killer

Elsas Procession was a tough one, as was Suite of Old American Dances. A tough one I played was called "Puchinello"...it was at a sectional festival in High School. Also, the third movement of Satiric Dances, by Dello Joio, and a piece called "Overture to Colas Breugnon" or something like that......that was nasty!

How about:

Kachina Dances/Elliot Del Borgo. It's both patterns and the tempo.

Elegy/John Barnes Chance. It's full of stagger breathing and breath control.

I don't know most of those titles most people gave but I guess I'll give my two cents. My junior year our Wind Ensemble played "Incantation and Dance". I thought that was a pretty difficult song. It was challenging but fun.

Gosh, I can remember "Incantation and Dance" from high school many years ago. Nice syncopated bass clarinet work that really takes two players to be loud enough. I practiced with the lead bass clarinet player for a year in high school to get this part down for our UIL contest. We both had to sound like one instrument - breathing, rhythm, tuning, the works. That was the only portion of any music that we got a high rating on for the entire contest. For all of the other parts of the competition, the band got mediocre or lower ratings.

Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger
Country Band March by Charles Ives
Celebration by ????

Personally I thought Celebration was the hardest of the three.

"Lincolnshire Posey" is tough.
"La Forza Del Destino" Overture has rough tonguing.
"Overture to Colas Breugnon" I remeber that puppy too.
"Suite of Old American Dances" tough but so much fun.
"Fiesta Del Pacifico" had a real tough middle section counting.

I went to a wind ensemble concert yesterday. They played an arrangement of Stravinsky's "Firebird" for band. It was something else. There are parts in there for clarinet that are difficult to do justice to. I have orchestral excerpts from this and I'd have to rate it as the hardest I know of. Those two fast movements have "too many notes."

Ahh, yes Elegy is a toughy...Im working on that one right now. Intonation is a monster. My band director (Patrick Jones...he came here from Penn State, anyone know of him? Hes awesome)works it so much, but it is wonderful.

La Fiesta Mexicana is a pain to play as well

We played Molly on the Shore this year too and got a I at contest. It's a difficult piece to keep everyone together but is very entertaining and a very happy song. Onother difficult piece is Dance of the New World. It's difficult technically and rhythmicly. A must try if you want difficult music.

Brandon and Tim:
It's Lincolnshire Posy not Posey.

We recently played a really old dixieland mix called Big Band Dixie. I played the solo clarinet part, and it was pretty easy, but the 1st clarinet part was really hard-and the band teacher put a very unconfident freshman on it!

This isn't a difficult band song, but I just wanted to mention that there is an awesome concert band song that's on some contest lists called Regenesis-Song of the Planet, and it totally rocks. I forgot the composer, though. Check it out some time.

Played a piece called Praeludium & Allegro back in the late 60's. Can't remember who wrote it but I probably wood-shedded that piece more than any I ever played. Another tough one was an adptation for band of the Introduction to Act III of Wagner's Lohengrin (sp)- page after page of 32nds at about 72.

My son played that piece for Solo & Ensemble when he was in 8th grade. He never quite got the Allegro up to indicated speed. Difficult but good transcription of the work - it's by Fritz Kreisler, and originally for violin.
