Does anyone know anything about the Buffet Model C 13 Bb Clarinet? The serial number on the model I am looking at is 639XXX. I am considering purchasing this instrument as a gift. Assuming it is in excellent condition, what would be a fair price? Thanks for the information.

My son and I played a used c13 in Oakland CA last week. They were asking around $900-1000 US for it. It played fairly well, but sounded stuffy compared to other horns. We liked a student model Yamaha in the same price range (they do reasonable discounts there) better. We did not buy it, or anything else yet.
My son (12 y.o) is very particular, he did not like the R13 (new), or any of the new student models (Selmer, LeBlanc, or Yamaha) in that price range. I would not pick a clarinet out for him, although I play as well as he (for now), he is more discerning (which has me concerned, for my pocketbook.)
I have the impression that after Xmas is not a good time to find used R13s, as they make wonderful gifts!

Go for an R13.Fantastic instrument-have it setup by a professional technician-alter some springs, and change c#/g# key to a cork pad.
However, simple alterations to technique will improve sound of yuor current instrument

Is the C13 the same horn made by Schreiber and sons for Buffet?
They can be "unfriendly", ya know resistant without adding tone color. A little slow to respond unless blown hard.
If you're fixed on a wooden horn and this one is under $400 with fresh pads, it might be a good value. If the repad was more than 2 years ago I would pass.
The plastic B12 plays well for beginners as do the entry level Yamahas.
If the recipient already plays, it is best for them to help choose the gift.
If they don't play, yet, then this horn could be unforgiving.
That's just my opinion.
Why not drop J. Butler a line? He always has a few around that should match your needs.

I belive the C13 is a conservatory clarinet... its basically for advanced students in college...

Nah. Consider it an E11. Conservatory students generally start with the likes of something in the professional lines.
