Now that I'm in a different timezone than Sneezy I notice what some other folks probably do:
Posting to Sneezy is slow during the hours of about midnight to 1 AM and then again between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM EST.
Sneezy does his housekeeping during those times - the first is re-indexing all new Klarinet articles, web pages, and other things that are here - and a few places that aren't here (it's htdig, and it builds all the search databases).
The second time period is when Sneezy does dual backups (one to disk and then it's copied to tape.) It uses compression to keep the backup to a resonable size (currently 1.2 Gb compressed!) so that eats up a good chunk of CPU time.
We'll see if I can't re-arrange things physically in the next few months to reduce the night time load.

It's a tradeoff; the htdig process is already reniced but the tape drive eats an IDE channel and thereby hits the CPU hard no matter what happens.
I've 3 IDE channels on Sneezy - 1 shares CDROM & Tape, the other 2 have 4 disks shared on them. SCSI'd be nice but the cost is prohibitive.
