 Opinions of three clarinets PLEASE!
Author: jreddmann

Heyy,
I am a college student majoring in music and I have the opportunity to play and possibly purchase a Leblanc LL, L7 or a CT which is a modified boehm. Opinions please.

Thank You,
Jessica

You should ask your primary teacher which one he/she prefers.

Yes, ask the teacher. But, if you want personal opinion I can offer one. I've played and owned two of the three you mention; the LL and the L7. Many doublers (those who play both sax and clarinet) prefer the L7 because of intonation and slightly large bore. That model (if you find a good one) seems to be easier for them to use for some reason. The L7 hasn't been made in many years, however, so you might find a better LL. The LL was a pricier Leblanc, but also was known for great intonation and a full, rich sound many jazz players enjoyed. It's also a good orchestral instrument.

The Buffet R-13 seems to be the gold standard among many teachers and colleges, however, so do what Chris suggested because your teacher might not want you to get either of the two Leblancs mentioned above.

The CT (or Centered Tone) is also an older instrument made by Selmer and used by a lot of jazz players also.

I own a CT which I love but classical players I've shown it to prefer their Buffets or other Selmers because the keywork is simpler. The CT is a good all-rounder but definitely more popular with jazz musicians. It was Benny Goodman's clarinet of choice apparently.
