 Francois Devienne Clarinet Sonatas
Author: wkkim

Hello,

I have a question in regards to cataloguing of clarinet sonatas by Francois Devienne. I will be recording the complete sonatas by Devienne, but it is a bit difficult to find an accurate listing of his clarinet works. I have three sonatas published by Editions Henry Lemoine, Paris. The Deuxieme sonate however is also published by Editions Musicales Transatlatiques, Paris, which appears to be an entirely different work:

Editions Musicales Transatlantiques, Paris
Deuxieme Sonate pour Si b et piano-forte (E.M.T. 1207) in the key of E-flat Major

Editions Henry Lemoine, Paris
Deuxieme sonate en si b majeur pour clarinette en si b et piano (27 397 H.L.)

Does anyone know if the E-flat major sonata is a transcription from Devienne's sonata for other instrument? Or would this be just an error in cataloguing by the publishers?

I tried communicating with them directly, but it seems not so helpful. Henry Lemoine said their editors are unable to see the music by the other publisher thus cannot verify. Editions Musicale Transatlantiques has not responded to me.

EMT has published Premiere sonate which appears to be the same work as the one published by EHL. I know the first sonata has been widely recorded by many clarinetists, including Sabine Meyer. Are there a discography of other sonatas?

Any information in regards to Devienne's clarinet sonatas would be very much appreciated. Please feel free to contact me directly, too. Thank you.

Best,

By no means is this a discography but I am aware of two LP recordings of the second sonata: Coronet 3116 (Brian Schweickhardt, John Cobb) and Orion ORS 78326 (John Russo, Lydia Walton Ignacio). Both are in Eb.

Best regards,

Dear Jack,

Thank you for your reply. It assures me that at least this E-flat sonata is probably not a transcription. Do you happen to own any of the mentioned LPs? If it's in E-flat, I am quite sure it is the one published by the EMT. The trouble is that particular edition does not have any note in the score, and I am unable to find any information from other sources.

The other "second sonata" in B-flat has quite extensive note prepared by both the editor and annotator. In that case, I might need to label them as two second sonatas in different keys...

Thank you.

I have both of these recordings. In both cases, the liner notes are virtually useless for your purposes. The Russo notes are simply an analysis of the contents of each movement. ("The first theme is heard in the clarinet and then is repeated in the piano in the tonic key ..." -- that sort of drivel.) The Schweickhardt gives brief biographical notes about Devienne and says little about the Sonata ("The music is typical of the 18th Century ... ")

If it's any help, the movements are marked as follows:

1. Allegro con spirito
2. Adagio
3. (Rondeau:*) Allegretto

*Schweickhardt

The timings are 12:14 for the Schweickhardt and 13:09 for the Russo. I listened to enough of the first movements of both recordings to verify that they are of the same work.

Best regards,
jnk

Dear Mr. Bob Phillips,

Thank you for your kind words. I think these late-classical sonatas, which we don't have much, are excellent source of pedagogical materials as well as music for sheer enjoyment. I will be recording all sonatas again in March to be released on Naxos. Hopefully, more people can find out about Devienne's wonderful music then.

Dear Mr. Jack Kissinger,

Thank you again for your time and sharing your information with me. I think there is not sufficient reliable sources about the works in English. I plan to visit the Conservatoire and the Bibliotque in January when I perform in Paris. Hopefully, I will be able to clear some things up by then. I will make sure to share with you what I find out too.

Best,

Let me echo Bob's comments on the recordings on your site. Also, FWIW, the version you play is the same version, in the same key, as the version both Schwickhardt and Russo play.

Best regards,

I had the immense pleasure of hearing Won (with his group, enhake), and working with him as my coach this past summer at the Chapel Hill Chamber Music Workshop. In addition to being a supernaturally good clarinetist, he is also a remarkable teacher, and a delightful person. The whole package.

Nice to see you here, Won. Are you in Korea now?

Dear Susan,

I'm very glad to see you here too! I don't know I can live up to your praises, though. I just performed here in Seoul at the Pan Music Festival. One of the longest concert I've played! I will be returning to teach at the workshop this year and hope to see you there again!

Hello,

I just wanted to share with a site I set up to discuss clarinet music by François Devienne. At the moment, I only have some sample tracks from my first CD of Devienne's Sonatas for Clarinet. I plan to build a database for complete catalogue of clarinet music by the composer as well as available discography etc. If you have anything you could suggest or would like to contribute, I would really appreciate.

www.francoisdevienne.org

I also started some preliminary reading about classical clarinets in order to carry out my research in Devienne's clarinet sonatas. I wrote an entry in my blog about early clarinet sonatas. I know there is an extensive research done on this in the US by Voxman and Titus. I would very much appreciate if you could suggest me additional sources I can access in regards to early sonatas for clarinet.

Please feel free to contact me via email. Also if somebody can teach me how to set up a hyperlink here, it would be really helpful for me. Thank you.

Best,

If you are coming to Paris anyway, you will find exactly what you need either in the main catalog or the catalog of the conservatory in the music department of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, opposite the old building in Rue Richelieu. I remember seeing an enormous amount of material by Devienne when I was doing research some time ago.

Karl Leister has recorded the first sonata under the Japanese label - Camerata.
