At this point in the "audition process" the NYPO can literally hire whomever they want to without further discussion nor playings. That's directly from Mark Nuccio who I spoke with at Clarinet Fest.

But my phone didn't ring yet........ ;)

Well, Ricardo won the Chicago audition, but backed out. Now he seems to be doing the same in New York.

If he can't stay happy in Chicago or Philadelphia, I can't image he would stay long in New York, which is a couple of steps lower.

Several years ago, when he was in Cleveland, David Shifrin did the same thing, winning auditions and then turning down the positions. I read (but do not know personally) that he is now persona non grata among audition committees.

I would love to hear Ricardo in New York. He's as good as there is. It's just that I think it's not likely.

No Ken, he didn't audition for NY. Other Orchestral Principals visit from time to time too.

Didn't Shifrin *play* principal in Cleveland for a season or maybe two? I don't think he backed out after the audition.

Must be nice to be so good you can pick and choose where you would go. I would absolutely die just for the chance.

Yes, being "that good" might be appealing to most of us. However, in spite of the fact that RM is a great guy, it is a little sad to think that there is no place that rises to his own professional standards anymore. Like, "all dressed up and nowhere to go" syndrome. I would rather be just good enough to make it with the NYP, CSO or Philly orchestras and play wonderful music with all those other "good enough to make it" musicians.

Or maybe, it's the Brett Farve problem--he just can't make up his mind......

Maybe he's content enough in Philadelphia that picking up stakes and moving is more than he wants to deal with unless something about the new situation is a real improvement. I don't have any idea why he backed out of Chicago. Was he formally offered the job in Berlin? It doesn't sound as though they've yet made an offer for him to turn down (or accept) in New York.

Also (this may sound naive), I don't know the personalities involved in Chicago or New York or how intra-orchestra relationships among the players might be involved, but in both Chicago and New York there is a long-time member of the section who has been playing associate principal who has competed for the principal position (and who probably has strong supporters within the orchestra). Could it be that RM wants to avoid that kind of potential conflict by staying in Philadelphia where he seems personally comfortable with the rest of the woodwind section?

Of course, we'll never know and in the end, I guess none of this is really anyone's business but RM's.

I can say that Ricardo was not offered the job in Berlin. He couldn't be offered it, it was not open to Boehm players

I posted the link so that a NYC area resident could see him play with them if interested.

When Bob Marcellus got sick, diabetic related blindness, he left Cleveland and went to teach at Northwestern. David Shrifin played with Cleveland. Stanley Hasty helped pick up the slack and taught at the Cleveland Institute for about a year, as well as Eastman.
