 Mouthpiece recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am about to buy a few mouthpieces to try out for a student and am looking for advice. I was about to order a couple of Leblanc Legend A5s which is what I used to recommend frequently to my younger students in the early 90s. I have not bought one in nearly 20 years. I know there are a thousand variables to consider but I am looking for something fairly open for a young (9th grade) student. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much,
Chad

The Clark W Fobes "Debut" is a solid beginner's mouthpiece for a very reasonable price (about $30). Also worth considering are the Gennusa Intermediate, and the J&D Hite Premier.

Also the Behn Overture, another excellent beginner's mouthpiece.

Forgot to mention: for an extra $5, Behn will "insure" the mouthpiece, replacing or repairing it free in case of damage, and you can trade up to his higher priced mouthpieces at full value.

Just a satisfied Behn customer, BTW.

I forgot about the Behn Overture. I haven't tried one of these before but I suspect it is on the same level as the others I mentioned. Pretty much any of the student-level mouthpieces sold by one of the "boutique" mouthpiece makers should be a pretty good piece to start with.

You might want to consider getting a few Vandorens for your student to try. Most mail order stores will send 3-4 different ones on approval. They're very reasonably priced and are even used by many pros. Check their website for tip openings, they have many to choose from. Then the student can have that through HS. if they take care of it. I usually move 9th graders up to a Vandoren M13-Lyre, 9th grade students are usually in their 4th year of study.
