Eb mouthpiece -- new or reface?
Author: lhoffman

I'm a doubler and dabbler in horn repair, with no experience on Eb prior to this week. I picked one up at a garage sale that I've managed to get playing nicely, so now I need to give some attention to the mouthpiece. It came with an old rubber Geo M. Bundy mouthpiece. Even though the rails are rounded, I can play it enough to see it has potential. I know that for sax mouthpieces at least, these old Bundy's make good blanks for a reface. I'm looking for some advice as to whether I should go for the reface with this one, or to start fresh with something else, and what that something else might be.
On a related note, has anybody played with refacing Eb mouthpieces with wider facings, to better match a Bb reed? I know it's fairly common to use a Bb reed on the effer, but a matched mouthpiece makes sense to me.

Why not try refacing the Bundy mouthpiece yourself ? At garage sale prices you haven't much to lose. Tom Ridenaur has a UTube lesson on refacing. I have used it myself with some success.

You could send it to someone to reface if it is a decent (hopefully hard rubber) blank. On the other hand, it may be much easier to play if you were to get a good mouthpiece The Hite Eb mouthpiece is pretty darned good and will not break the bank.

You said it has potential, so I would have someone who has experience reface it for you. I'm too busy to take on any more mouthpieces right now, but there are others who will make it play up to its potential.
