Ben Armato used to make perfectareed machines that measures reeds perpendicular to the surface plane, but for the past few years I noticed that he's made the gauge measure at an angle so the user can simply read the measurements without lowering their head or neck.
But has anyone found whether these two different perfectareeds give the same measurements despite the angle they measure from? I have the newer kind that reads from an angle and wanted to make sure I'm getting the measurements that I would if I had the older kind.

I don't know the answer to your question and haven't ever used a Perfecta-reed. But I know how it works and I'm wondering if it makes any difference if the readings are the same for the two setups so long as you do all of your measurements with the same one. My understanding is that the machine is meant to give accurate comparisons between reeds - generally between a model that plays well and a new reed that doesn't - to help in correctly adjusting the new reed. If you use the same Perfectareed, I think the comparisons at each point should still be valid.

Generally, with a lot of measuring tools like this, it doesn't matter if the results are the same or different with the different designs.
The only thing that matters is weather the tool is accurate to itself, because you generally don't need to compare measurements with other people that much.

I have a couple of the older ones, I have a few students who use the newer ones. THe measurements rarely come out the same, new vs old, new vs new.
As was said earlier, as long as the guage is accurate with itself. Do not expect to use an arbitrary set of numbers from a friend using a different guage, using your own guage. It might work, it might not.
Incidentally, I prefer the older Perfecta reeds. Much better indicator (Mitutoyo, compared to a made in China indicator), and it seems less complicated. The newer ones allow for many more measuring spots-but I personally find the older ones provide enough.

Thanks for all of your help. I realize that even the same kind of perfectareed would not give the same exact measurements every time and that trying to copy a reed using arbitrary numbers from another isn't very helpful.

Just keep this in mind. It's not so much the measurements as it is the density of the cane. Sure measurements help but it's not a cure all by any means. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
