There's a splashy ad at the bottom of the bulletin board this morning (Oct. 4) for a Chinese company called TradeTang.com. Among the many different products it sells, apparently in bulk for discount prices, are band instruments. According to its ad, these include Buffet and Yamaha student instruments, the B12 and YCL250. But are they the real deal? A quick look suggests that these are the Chinese knock-offs others have reported seeing on eBay.

Probably just as fake as their Selmer Kookaburra for less than $600...

Is is an ad by Google?

If so, then I think the content of that space is more dependent on your web browsing preferences than anything else. I assume Google puts ads there that are site related (music) but those that it thinks may be of interest to you as suggested by information stored about you on your computer internet history, and which country you are in.

I don't think the BB has much, if any, influence on what "Ads by Google" appear - so others may not have seen the ad you refer to.

Or is that level of "Big Brother" not here yet?

Chris

AFAIK every subscriber to Google Ads can have certain classes of ads as well as individual ads blocked.

Occasionally, an ad for "reed switches" (magnetically operated electrical switches with a metal reed inside a tiny glass tube) would pop up here. It's all about the contents of the site, and some software-assisted guesswork.

Has nothing to do with big brother.

Chris,
You would appear to be correct. The ad has been replaced at this moment, but another is in its place, and "Ads by Google" is part of it.

Those are Google ads on the top & bottom. The Google ad algorithms select what they they are relevant and will bring Google & the retailer or wholesaler money.

I do block some number of compaies that display what I think are offensive ads, but nowadays there are a category of ads that come on for five minutes and are then gone. It's not worth chasing them down.

I have refreshed a few times, and have now got the tradetang.com advert at the bottom of this BB.

Following the link you get to "Made in France" Buffet B12s with many close us photos. You also get to "2009 New Music Instrument'YAMAHA'YCL-250 Clarinet" (their inverted commas aroung Yamaha). The photo is not close up of the logo.

Mark - you may want to have a look and consider the ad as it appears on the BB

Chris

Edit - OK, you answered my question when you posted at the same time as me!

Thanks, Mark.
Once Chris pointed out that they were Google ads, I understood the situation.

They're an aggregator ... and now on the banned list. It'll take 24 hours or so for them to be gone.

One of my passions is photography. About 2 years ago I saw a $4000 lens on one of those trading sites for $1800. Well I fell for it and ordered one. They would only take Western Union. About 2 weeks later came a package with a $5 watch in the box. There was no possible recourse of getting back my money.

So if you decide to buy something use Paypal, get insurance, something like that.

As they say if it's too good to be true walk away.
