I was wondering if anyone out there has come up with a good use for all the plastic reed holders that come with reeds? I have plenty and really don't know what to do with them. If they are recyclable they have no indication on them. I bend the rules of my local recycling authority by putting out plastics without designation numbers on them but am thwarted at the curbside occasionally. Any Ideas???

(1) when ingeniously combined with matchsticks and rubber bands:
...a new, improved trap for very small mice.
(2) for Man From U.N.C.L.E. wannabes:
...increased safety for that scalpel blade hidden in your sock.
(3) reusable nosehair tweezers for Clydesdales.
(4) confetti holders (for the more abstemious) on NYE - hey! - that's tonight!!!
...hmmm...coloured paper, scissors...

I've used them to clean the gunk that acculmulates above and below the cork on the tenons. Maybe i shouldn't have to be doing this if I greased my instrument properly.

I use vandorens, and I have found over the years that those cases make wonderful bookmarks, especially in musical books when you have to turn back really quickly. I seriously use them in all sorts of books -- they even make in-a-pinch paperclips. I'm not sure if they are recyclable or not because I don't know what number plastic they are. Does anyone know? If they are recyclable, I'd love to send them out with the milk jugs and coke cans once a week. Perhaps there could be entire playgrounds made of recycled reed cases! My inner conservationist is tickled at all of the possibilities!

[Tirade about recycling snipped by Webmaster]
As for uses for those little reed holders, I can only think that maybe you could could use them for single-use swizzle sticks.
Ideas anyone?
[Why yes. This topic was actually a little funny until you decided to politicize it. If recycling in your community is so upsetting to you, please contact the local authorities or members of the local press to "expose" your rip-off. Doing it here is worthless - and too off-topic.

I'm sorry if I started something bad there with the recycling comment. I had no intention of igniting another to-be-censored furor. What is with the sudden abundance of bad blood on the bulletin board? It seems like Mark is removing harsh comments from the board on a daily basis! Come on, folks! Let's be happy! We have the whole new year and new millenium (for the purists) ahead of us! How about starting it out on a good, friendly, happy note! We should all have resolutions to practice more and to become better musicians and clarinetists, not to become snippy, mean-spirited contributors!
Peace, love, and clarinets for the new year!

Melanie, you did nothing wrong at all. Some people seem to want to use the BBoard as a place to release steam. It'd be much better if they went to one of the newsgroups that have "advocacy" or "politics" or "rant" in their group name and/or charter.

Give them to those benighted souls still using brown-box Ricos. At least their reeds will be better preserved than in those cardboard holders.

Hold them together with scotch tape in circle. This can be used as a reed dry-up
or aging holder. Put them somewhere near ceiling. They are holders anyway.
