 Bells up!
Author: oboeidaho

I thought I'd post here even though I'm an oboe player as it affects both sections...
So we're doing Mahler 1 this week, and I was wondering how high people usually do the bells up - over the stand or to the side? I was extremely disturbed to notice that when I put my bell up I can't see the music AT ALL due to my stupid bifocals (getting old is the pits). I was kind of holding my oboe to the side and reading out of the corner of my eye, but after reading an old string on the clarinet board I wonder if it isn't better to just memorize the few measures and put bells over the stand?

What have you done if you've played Mahler?

I couldn't do that with bass clarinet (although it wasn't actually marked in the bass clarinet parts).

I can't see any problem with playing off to one side (but with the reed still central) so you can read the music while Schalltrichter auf-ing.

The opinions I express are my own.

Get rid of the bi-focals and use longer distance reading glasses. That's what I've done, the longer focus readers I obtained at the local chemist. I call these my music readers

I'd have a problem with my bass when directions would say "bell down". [wink]

Back to the original question - how' bout a cheat sheet on the lyre? (ours can be attached/detached within seconds)

I guess some clarinets have lyre attachments, but I haven't ever seen one for oboe! Thanks for the suggestion though.

Memorize the part and put that bell up!

I agree with Eric,

I wear glasses (just normal glasses) and when I put my bell up, I can't see anything at the bottom of the page, and not much anywhere, so I just memorize the parts, and play my heart out.
My thought is, doing bells up half-way isn't really an effect. Mahler wanted the bells in the air for a reason, so it's worth really putting them up

That's just one reason you should get a pair of reading glasses. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

i remember performing mahler 1 in college. it was a blast. I had the third part with Eb there at the end...needless to say, my flute friends weren't very happy...until they started wearing ear protection.

There you go: http://www.reisser-musik.de/notenhalter-fuer-klarinetten/notenhalter-fuer-oboe-klarinette-riedl-nr-318.html or http://www.thomann.de/gb/riedl_318.htm (same manufacturer, two different pictures...)
