I'm trying to find out just how old my Eb and Bass clarinets are. I know they're fairly old since they have an older-style logo on them. I have the serial numbers, but haven't had luck doing searches for them. The Eb is #3552 and the bass is #9374. The logo on the bass is actually gone, but there's enough of the outline left that I can tell they had the same logo. Someone told me the Eb may be from the 50s or 60s. The serial number list on this site says 1905-ish, but I wasn't sure if that applied to clarinets in all keys or not.
For their age, they play pretty well. Once I figured out that I have to pull out my Eb barrel about 3mm (it's a 40mm Scott barrel), it plays in tune and the 12th are closer than the 12ths on my R13s from the mid-1990s (go figure). On the bass, the only obvious issue is that the throat Bb is extremely sharp, so I have to use the alternate fingering which is closer to being in tune. Too bad I never remember since it's an awkward fingering, at least it is for me. Above the break, I can play it consistently up to the G that sits on top of the staff, which is the highest I've been able to go on bass without nasty squeaking and whatnot.
Thanks
Rachel
