Hi,
I'm thinking about taking up the French Horn but I don't know whether or not it will affect my clarinet embouchure in any way.
Does anybody know if it can have an adverse affect, as I have heard other instruments can when played for longer times(eg. oboe). I especially don't want to jeopardise my clarinet playing.
I've played brass before, but only lower, and it seems to be fine with my clarinet playing.
Cheers,
RJS

From many sources I've heard over the years, the issue is whether your clarinet embouchure has ruined your French Horn chops.
There is a much more refined difference in the embouchure of French Horn and Flute from octave to octave, note to note that simply does not enter into the equation with clarinet. All we do is man handle the muscles around the lips.
Case in point, I know a trumpet player who could easily do two octaves on clarinet just getting started but a french horn player going to clarinet for music ed. classes thought he was going to die.

Hi!
After playing the clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and flute for many decades, I bought a double Olds French horn from 1954 and have worked on it daily for the last two years. In my case, there is no conflict of these embouchures and no problem switching between them. The high notes on the French horn require a long time to develop, however, but I do not expect to become a very serious player of it. The main concern is the time needed to practice daily. Good luck!
