I think the major reason for Karl's remarkable legato is his impeccable and consistant breath control. I've had the pleasure to hear him play "live" in a local clarinet clinic and his playing style seems effortless--totally "in control" of all technical aspects regarding tone production and musical phrasing (which he stressed above all else). He did not (refused to) talk about "equipment" but did mention the importance of breathing adequately to sustain phrasings. I think that with Karl, it's all about his steady embouchure and breath control--plus his in depth knowledge of the music he grew up with. For what he plays, there are none better........

I've never had the pleasure of hearing him live, but on recordings he sounds as if he's got bottomless lungs. Or does he circular breathe?

Lelia, I have sources that have told me that his CDs are often quite heavily cut. I may be wrong, but I think some of the phrases I've heard are not possible in one breath on his CDs. Don't hold me at my word though, this is all hear-say.
