Any advice on how to play the top register cleanly in this piece? Am playing in a regional competition soon.

I use "open g" fingering for the high d's. I think it helps this solo to think "tenor sax' rather than bass clarinet. Helps conquer fear of heights!

Good luck!

You may try using only the register key for the high D. No other keys. That will make it come out easily without raising the pitch too much.

I recorded this with the BSO, Baltimore, several years ago and we're playing it in a few months in Baltimore again, we just did it on a run out, and Carnegie Hall in NY in November. Sam K is a former student of mine and Larry B is a well respected former bass player but both of them mentioned the high D though it's a Db not a D natural. This is the way I play it for good intonation and legato.
Side key Bb in meas.1, in meas. 2 switch to the fork Bb after the slur so I can play the side keys for the Db, overblowing the throat tone F# side keys, then in meas. 3 side key Bb on the first Bb then taking a short breath and I use the fork Bb going to the side keys Db again and then I use the 1/1 for the last Bb in that meas. but you could use the side key Bb again if you prefer. It may seem complicated but once you do it a few times it really works great. Of course all your Bb fingerings need to be reasonably well in tune, mine are. Good luck, ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
