 identity of buffet bass clarinet

I just can't find anything on buffet-crampon matching it.

Goes down to low Eb, wooden, buffet crampon stamp. Has metal tenon caps. NO badge labeling it prestige, NO model designation. Probably around ten years old. Serial number 35547.

Thanks

Alexi

Funny that this would come up today. Last night, at rehearsal, a friend of mine told me he had just purchased one of these. He told me that it differs from the 1183 in that it is not a Prestige model, the register key is on the upper joint rather than the neck and it does not have the alternative left-hand Eb lever. According to him, the Eb key cup is on the lower joint rather the bell and the bell has a resonance hole. From pictures I have seen, it appears to have a one-piece neck.

There is a review here:

Also, for the time being, if you search completed auctions on eBay for "Buffet bass clarinet" without the quotes, you will find an (older) 1180, recently sold by quinntheeskimo, who always includes LOTS of pictures. I say an older one because it's pictures show the Eb on the bell. From what I can tell, newer ones have the Eb on the body and a vent hole on the bell (as I mentioned above).

Buffet does not list this model on its website so I wonder if it has been discontinued recently. My friend said his is about 4 years old.

Best regards,
jnk

The 1180 has a single register vent, with a cork tenon neck; it's a nicely made but basic bass clarinet --- I wrote on SaxOnTheWeb that in my opinion it's just an overpriced Noblet. I've tried a couple (though not recently); in my limited recollection they both played pretty well. It is NOT an 1183, though.

I'm not positive, but I think the 1180-2 bass clarinet was made by Schreiber, and when Buffet and Schreiber split that bass was dropped from the line. Now that Buffet owns Schreiber I don't know what's going to happen.

Interestingly, I arrived at the school where I teach to find three of these hard-to-identify bass clarinets. I think they play and sound great... when they work at all. The spring used to balance the upper register vent vs. the throat Bb is extremely touchy and I have yet to find a repair technician that can get it right. In fact, one instrument had the spring break entirely and so far no one in town has even been able to order the part as Buffet's parts department couldn't identify the instrument. If anyone in the Southern California area knows a technician that might be able to help, I'd love to hear about it.

Stuart, I'd say the techs you've been dealing with are incompetent. As for the broken spring, you measure its diameter and order a replacement from ANY musical instrument repair supplier. As for the 'spring vs. spring' adjustment, it's an annoying fact of life with just about every brand and model of bass clarinet, not to mentions saxophones, oboes, etc. Jeez..............
