Sorry if this has been covered a thousand times, I did a quick search and didn't see a recent thread but I could have missed it.
My 9 year old daughter is starting to play the clarinet. She has my old student level Artley (resonated material) which is in great shape and is going in for a tune up this week, but the original mouthpiece is missing. The mouthpiece currently in the case is the Buffet F3A that came with my R-13. I use a 5RV lyre myself and don't care for the buffet mouthpiece. I'm wondering if the buffet mouthpiece will be a crappy one for her to learn on? It's in perfectly good shape and has been barely used, just not sure if it's the right style for a beginner. Any thoughts are appreciated; I've never been a pro on mouthpieces, I just know what I like for myself!

Lauriee, you have two mouthpieces. Let her try them, and go from there.

i wouldn't let her play on the Buffet mouthpieces. you can try the Fobes debut, or Behn overture is also only about $35. i've heard good things about both mouthpieces.

I also recommend Fobes Debut or Behn Ouverture (I own both).
Don't bash Buffet mouthpieces; they are excellent - as doorstops.

Another vote for the Fobes Debut. I like it enough that I sometimes throw it on while teaching. It plays great.

lauriee -
Buffet mouthpieces play poorly for almost everyone. Don't handicap your daughter with it.
The least expensive decent mouthpiece is the plastic Yamaha, which is stocked at every instrument store for around $25. http://www.wwbw.com/Yamaha-4C-Bb-Clarinet-Mouthpiece-462505-i1143237.wwbw It's easy to play and sounds good. Kids are hard on mouthpieces, and you'll probably need to replace your daughters' mouthpiece at least once before she learns to be careful. It's worth keeping one of the Yamahas around for emergencies (hers or yours).
For around $35, there are somewhat better beginners' mouthpieces from Fobes, Behn, Hite and Ridenour. For the small increment in price, your daughter will be better off with one of these, though you probably wont' hear any difference for a while.
Be sure she gets to play with other people as early as possible, which is a huge advantage.

Wow, thanks everyone! Looks like the Fobes Debut is the far and away winner.
While I had the same thought about just letting her try both mouthpieces, my fear is that they will be too hard for her but she won't know the difference (and neither will I, because although I can PLAY the clarinet, I can't teach it to save my life).

The mouthpieces recommended here all have good reputations BUT...
of even greater importance (in my opinion) is that you should set her up with decent private teacher in your area, f at all possible. If you do this, have the teacher recommend a particular mputhpiece.

It is surprising with all those negative opinions about Buffet
mouthpieces, that the company is doing nothing about it.

Thanks again everyone! Just ordered my Fobes, which, incidentally, is on sale this week! My daughter is going to be taking private lessons, thanks for the advice.
