Would this be a good solo?

Hi everyone! I hope ya'll had a nice Christmas! I did! Well, anywayz....
All State tryouts are coming up and while I was sitting here I was thinking, if I make it (oh gosh I hope I do!) I want to do the Solo Festival thing. And I've had my eye on this one piece out of C. Rose 32 Etudes. I think it's number 7, or 11, or 9, well it's an odd number. It's in the key of E minor and in 6/8 time. Most people I know are planning on doing solos by Mozart and all. I was just wondering, do you think the judges would like the one that i like? I mean, would they prefer me to play something more....classical I guess you could say, maybe one that actually had a name? Get back to me! If no, then could you suggest some and where I could get them? Thanx! Happy New Year!

Your state probably has a solo list that you have to select from. So it might be a good idea to check with your band director or your clarinet teacher.

Dee is correct. Some states have a prescribed solo list and others do not. There are also accompaniment requirements that may or may not apply. You would not be able to play the etude if it doesn't meet the critirea of your state's music governing board.

You can never go too far wrong by playing the 1st or 3d mvt. of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. Also consider the Hindemuth Sonata, Weber Concertino or one of his Concertos. The Rose Studies are really meant for musical and technical developement and, while nice, I think a major work for clarinet would be more impressive. Plus, you would be starting to build your repretoir, which is important if you wish to pursue a career in performance. Good luck with whatever you choose, and Happy New Year!!!!!!!!
