Apologies that this is perhaps off-topic, but it might be an interesting discussion topic for the group. Then again, maybe not...
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/Musopen/record-and-release-free-music-without-copyrights
Quote from the site: "We want your help to hire an internationally renowned orchestra to record and release the rights to: the Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius, and Tchaikovsky symphonies. We have price quotes from several orchestras and are ready to hire one, pending the funds."
I'm not sure what to make of it from a music perspective. In general I am a fan of free and open-source stuff, and things that relax some of the stringent (IMHO) rules on copyrighted materials. But not being directly involved in any kind of music production (just an amateur clarinetist), I am probably not qualified to render much of an opinion.
Would be interested to hear from others...

Guess it's nice as an option to hear what a piece of music sounds like without shelling out, and to incorporate into indy projects. I'm concerned about quality, though. At their budget (and with the organizer's attitude toward conductors), it'll most likely be a tame, forgettable recording.
I like the idea in theory, but the presentation and philosophy seem to be one of "once we've recorded this piece, we're done with it."
Then again, how many recordings of Beethoven 3 does one really need?
