 Who to listen to?
Author: Mark Cresitello-Dittmar

Hi,

I'd like to build my collection of clarinetists
to listen to. I'm mostly into the jazz/swing
style for clarinet (ie: Benny Goodman), but
would like some good clasical recordings too.

Any recommendations?

Gosh. You are into subjective territory here, but it's a good question to prompt us into thinking who we really like. Just for starters, I'd suggest Thea King, Sabine Meyer, Michel Arrignon, Michael Collins, Stanley Drucker among the many I admire. But I'm sure that every clarinetist who reads this will have his or her own ideas.

For polar opposites, try Buddy DeFranco vs. Kenny Dravern.

KD has some spectacular recordings with "The Swedish Jazz Kings" on Opus3 records. SBush7815@aol.com will help you out, Amazon couldn't source this wonderful label.

My biggest surprise, recently, was to hear Pacquito D'Rivera on "Cachao, the master sessions". It's pretty obvious when the players are listening each to the other and respond to ideas that are introduced around the chart.
Crescent Moon/Epic EK64320.

Lastly, although there is some unfortunately artless singing, "Guy and Billy" with Billy Novick covering most of my favorite stuff including "Lousiana fairy tale".
Daring records CD 3014 (distributed by Rounder).

Lastly, check out Reference recordings @ www.referencerecordings.com, "Ports of Call" with the Magical Minnesotans, eh. The Alven piece has some pearls.

On the classical side, I've always been bowled over by Gervase De Peyer.

I can't stand Gervase De Peyer.. but thats just me. I admire Jack Brymer, Thea King, Sabine Meyer, and an Australian clarinettist most of you may not have heard of - Paul Dean.

I like:

Karl Leister.
Robert Marcellus.
Harold Wright.
Benny Goodman.
Richard Stoltzman.
David Shifrin.
Robert Spring.

Each with their own identity and style of playing; each giving the instrument their own personal "signature." That to me is more important than complete tonal conformity...

In the jazz field, try Bennie G., Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain. Three completely different styles and yet so good. RCA has re-released some of the old time Chicago/New Orleans style jazz groups from the 20s and 30s on CDs. Some of the styles in these old groups is VERY interesting.

I need to put in my vote for Emma Johnson to have a place with the rest of the other fine clarinetists already named. She is quite the musician.
