Its important to buy new if you want to lose the maximum amount of your parents money between the puchase date and the date you sell it. I'd go for the Prestige if I were in your shoes .

One of the danger involved in buying instruments from that auction site would be exactly what David Blumberg just mentioned, being that it is entirely possible that you will need to send the horn over to an overhaul.
Then again, one should keep in mind that a good deal of professionals will need to personalize the horn that he/she had purchased, which obviously incurs more cost in some cases.
I learned about this the hard way. I obtained my CSG in this fashion, with an offer that I cannot possibly refuse, and just came back from having Morrie giving it an overhaul with all pads replaced, billed at the tune of $800. This worked out in my case, but you really should think carefully over the matter of getting a higher-end horn.

Another possible problem is that you end up just not liking the clarinet, eventhough it might be the same model as anotehr that you liked.

Well, one thing that I know for sure is that "the" sign that you like the clarinet comes when would try to find excuse to play some more on the horn instead of putting her back into the case, and finding yourself lost in the fun of making noise on the thing.
(Is it wrong to start having affection over a musical instrument, come to think of it?)

For me, the Prestiges were always a bit more bright than the standard R13. I always thought it was a way for Buffet to have a "Selmerish" sounding horn in their line-up. Of course I've come to like them more over the years, but I have to take the left hand "Eb/Ab" lever off........just gets in the way.

While Buffet makes excellent clarinets,I wonder why you would want to limit your selection to just one maker. You owe it to yourself to investigate the Leblanc by Backun clarinets. You might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of these clarinets and their value.
Disclaimer: I was not all that big a Leblanc fan (owned two previous ones, and really preferred the R13), but when I tried the new Backun Symphonie, it changed my opinion.

About the difference between the R13 and and the R13 Prestige, Daniel Deitch (who does work on the clarinets of many professionals in the SF Bay Area) recently told me that most professional classical clarinetists prefer the standard R13 to the Prestige. I'm not sure why; maybe the "bright" sound is bothersome to many?
Anyway, he said it as if was a known thing, generally accepted, conventional wisdom... so I was expecting to see comments confirming that in this thread. Has anyone heard this? Felt this way?
(I guess I'm looking for validation for the idea that I DON'T need to replace my R13.)

I'll personally laugh in the face of anyone who thinks that the Prestige is "brighter" than the regular R-13.
The Prestige (set) that I own I found to be darker than the non Prestige R-13.
To each his own, but I'd still laugh at that.

Mine is from 1988 - maybe the changed their "philosophy" of that model since then, but mine I find to have a darker sound than the R-13.
I tried 50 Clarinets to find the set, and they were clearly better sounding than the others. I don't like brightness in the sound.

I would second Mike's comments from above.\
Perhaps not "bright," but there is a difference that lends them to be less amenable to an R13 section. Not that you cannot make it work, but R13 reigns supreme (sorry Tosca) for a reason.
