I bought a Yamaha double case for my matching Series 9* set and just got it delivered today, but just wondering approximately what vintage it is.
It's brown vinyl covered with the usual red velvet interior and much larger than the more recent case I'm using for my full Boehms, though the inside layout is only suitable for standard length joints which suits these Series 9*s fine.
It has the metal Yamaha badge on the lid (although I've now unscrewed it and stuck the brown plastic/gold Selmer badge on there). And it's in excellent condition - seems to have only housed an A clarinet judging by the impression in the lid cushion.

I tried a YCL-72A around 1985 and I'm quite sure that was the case it came in.

I've never seen this type of double case before - either the black vinyl covered case with aluminium edging and blue interior, or the more recent grey vinyl covered case with red interior.
And as usual with Yamaha cases, it's incredibly well built and fitted out.

That I know of, these double cases were used from 1985 to 1988, perhaps even later.
The exterior color came in brown or gray. I've had both.
My 1986 Yamaha 72A came in this case. When I sold the clarinet, the case was included.
If interested, I have an original Yamaha padded black canvas cover to fit the double case.
I purchased it at a later time and did not include it with the sale of the instrument.

I have one of those cases. It came with my Yamaha SE I purchased in about 1997. At least in the UK it was being used for the 'custom' series instruments. My 1990 CX came in the other case style you described. Both are sturdy though the catches on the older case aren't as secure. The only complaint I have is their weight - no problem if only ever travelling by car but I prefer my Bags case when walking or using public transport.
