Has anybody out there tried the pyne belcanto mouthpiece?? Is it resistant compared to the B40 Lyre? How is the articulation? and Is it worth the price?

Thank you

I've owned a Pyne Bel Canto before, it brought me many years of happiness and the design of the facing gives it a full dark sound. It is slightly resistant compared to the B40 and it can boost your sound ten-fold. The reason I had to give it up was my lack of proper washing techniques. You should try them out before you buy, they are all different. If you find one that you like, you'll be happy, just keep it clean! I've learned my lesson.

Without wanting to get into anything too gross, what do you mean by "The reason I had to give it up was my lack of proper washing techniques. ... just keep it clean! I've learned my lesson?"

What could have happened to it that couldn't be cleaned by a good washing with vinegar or a commercial mouthpiece wash?

Just curious.

The thing is with the Pyne mouthpieces, they have a special kind of rubber that doesn't really shine and is very sensitive to not cleaning it proper. The first time I met Morrie Backun, I showed it to him and he told me the best method for washing it which was too late. I always just ran warm water through the bore and I thought that that was enough. The outside does start to wear after a while and it can get gross. Once I got my MoBa mouthpiece, I make sure I was it every week.

In case you were wondering what the best technique for washing is, this is it: fill a large bowl with dish soap and lukewarm water, submerge your mouthpiece and cap in the water for at least 15 minutes. After it is done bathing, wipe out the inside and outside with a paper towel.

An acid bath (vinegar) isn't necessary (or good after doing it). The vinegar can eventually wear the mouthpiece out.

James Pyne has made top quality mouthpieces for many years. http://www.pyne-clarion.com/Home.html

Unlike most makers, he uses an asymmetrical design, so his mouthpieces can't be compared to other others and take some getting used to. Many fine players use or have used them.

Every mouthpiece will play differently for every player. The only way to know how a mouthpiece compares to another for you is to try them. Also, remember, no two mouthpieces play alike no matter who makes them. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
