A collection of live performances recorded in the late 1930's by sound engineer William Savory are now at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Among the 975 discs are recordings of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, and yes, Benny Goodman.

Enjoy the sound clips! Having listened countless times Coleman Hawkins brilliant "Body and Soul" solo, I look forward to hearing this live performance in its entirety.

Be sure to check out the duet with Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson. Teddy's playing harpsichord!

Clarinet and harpsichord together playing swing...
I've never even heard a harpsichord playing swing!
Now I guess I've heard it all!

Justme: For some more swinging harpsichord (Johnny Guarnieri) and clarinet, check out recordings by Artie Shaw and his Gramercy 5.

As the writer quotes someone as saying..."You can never have to much Lester Young"! I agree.
Great stuff...thanks for posting.

That's great, all of these recordings are from my favorite period and from some of my favorite jazz artists of all time! It's a real treat to get to hear these, especially Benny Goodman! I wonder if they will release these recordings publicly.
