This video is quite enchanting and has some nice phrasing including effective slides. Simple and heartfelt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjCeavwbslM&feature=related

Interesting. I don't think it sounds like a clarinet at all. It sounds similar to a folk instrument they use round here which I don't know the name of but hear lots of. Not sure if I like it or not really!

Yeah, sounds like Acker Bilk were playing a Tarogato or a shawm.

Hello John.

It sounded as if he was playing almost in the Greek style?

I won't knock styles or tones as they are in the ear of the beholder with many people liking different things ( and quite a few love the Greek Style as well,) so, I'm going to stay neutral about it.
I think it would sound better on sax , though...

Thanks for posting it.

P.S. I hope that you're doing as well with your oboe now as you are with the rest of the instruments that you play.

Take Care

For me, the underlying message is that there is sooooo much more that CAN be done with sound on a clarinet that goes virtually unexplored in the world of "legitimate" clarinet playing.

Let's not forget that Benny Goodman was praised in his day for being able to imbue his playing with a vocal quality. And listening critically to recording sessions done side by side, one can hear how differently he produced a sound for a vocal accompaniment vs a hard charging instrumental, or even vs an instrumental ballad.

It makes me a little sad that much of today's jazz players don't explore the whole palette of tone colors in this way anymore.

I thought the music was very expressive and enjoyable. But I thought I kept seeing and hearing signs that this musician was a doubler or clarinetist with some articulation problems that would make him an 'interesting' choice for an ensemble.

I kept waiting for this musician to go to the clarion range because I can usually tell immediately if the player is a real clarinet (vs. a doubler like me) in that and the altissimo range--it is hard to hide intonation, articulation, and fingering lapses the higher you go.

Gandalfe:-,

It's not that I totally disliked it, but I would like to hear at least some of it played on a 'dreamy' Tenor Sax, I think this specific piece may sound better to me on that particular instrument.
That's just me though...

Stefan:-,

I wonder if you like this performance by the aforementioned Acker Bilk any better?

As a side note, I have heard Acker Bilk sound totally different from what most people have come to associate his sound as being. I don't happen to remember in what performances they were, though...

Justme please don't start another Acker Bilk arguing. People should know by now that I take Acker Bilk's playing as an example how one should NOT play the clarinet. Enough said about Bilk. Lyrical and phrasing were not things that came into my mind watching this video and I really don't like airy clarinet tone(even don't like it too either on the saxophone).

Iceland Clarinet, please post a video of you playing clarinet so we can see how it should be done. Thanks in advance.

Looking at some of the other videos by the same group, you see that the clarinetist in this one is playing a few different instruments in the others.
As we see here has his hand at guitar!!

skygardener:-,

According to his bio he's a multi instrumental musician/singer/songwriter who plays among other things electric guitar, acoustic guitar, hurdy gurdy, clarinet, flute and cello.

He plays a mix of soft rock, Balkan, blues, hard rock.

Interesting, I can see why John posted this.

Very unusual and very nice. A very 'airie' voice like effect. Probably produced by a loose 'sax ' type embouchure and soft reed perhaps. It's what makes the clarinet such a remarkable instrument in that there seems to be no end to the different sounds one can get out of it.

I like it! By minimizing the screen I listened just to the music. It sounds like movie music, from a scene where some kind of meditation or travel is going on but no words are being spoken. I really like how the voice was different than what we'd normally expect.
