'hissing, whistling' sound with Zonda reed on Wells mpc
Author: golfnclarinet

I recently acquired Frank Wells B2 mouthpiece and am enjoying it.

It happens when I change register (ex: from 1st C to 2nd C)
With same Zonda reed(#4) on other mouthpieces I have, no problem.
With other brand reeds(Gonzalez FOF 3.75, RC 3.75) on Wells mouthpiece, no problem.
It only happens with Zonda on Wells.
Not all of Zonda does that. Only 1 or 2 out of 1 box(5 reeds).
Any idea?

Thanks.

The two Wells mouthpieces I have are narrower than most others. The Zonda reeds you are using may overlap the sides of the rails, which spoils the sound.

Also, the Wells tips are less rounded than others. You must make sure the reeds cover the tip without leaking, particularly at the corners. Leaks there often cause odd sounds.

Finally, if the Zondas have sharp corners at the tip, you need to round them off. I've found that a sharp corner frequently causes whistles.

Ken, I think this is the case.

Have you tried Rico Grand Concert Select - Thick Blank? I use #3 1/2 with my Wells B2. It seems to work very well. I've had less success with Rico Reserves and V-12's.

I have one box.
I didn't try them on Wells but they're bit soft for me.
I'm using Zonda #4 or Gonzalez FOF #3.75.
But, I'll try.

Thanks.
