Someone on the Flute BBoard has mentioned using Armor-all to protect pads. Any comments about this ?

If you have an extra horn perhaps you can try this with 1 pad, before doing all of the pads.
I've never heard of this application and I wouldn't do this to my horns. I would think that during and after using this some of the pads may stick to the tone holes and maybe cause some air leaks; depending on the type of pad.
It also depends on the type of pad in question. I would never put this on cork pads, or skin pads. With the sax I would think after a period of time the leather pads would crack, because armor-all dries up relativly fast; maybe 3 to 6 weeks and the leather pads will dry up too and maybe crack.
Interesting question to ask, because it's not unusual to see leather pads treated with some sort of substance keeping the pads soft and from drying out.

I think the idea may have merit on leather pads at least, and maybe skin. Armorall certainly does a good job protecting and preserving vinyl and rubber, and is as 'slippery' when dry as silicone, so pads shouldn't stick to the toneholes like happens with some products containing oil and/or wax.
I'll give it a try on one of my lower value horns and report back next year .

What are you trying to protect the pads from? I play a couple of hours everyday and I don't have a problem with pads wearing out. Think twice before doing something that could cost you a big repair bill later.

Dave; When using Armorall on motorcycle seats, you want to be careful with brakes and throttle, especially with a passenger!! Ducati 900 on jasperbay.
Just hope this reply reaches you in time. You might want to be a little sparing when spraying the sidewalls, too!!

Thanks, Clark. The throttle is the one you really have to watch. And don't worry, I was 25 years younger when I made THAT mistake!
