I recall reading somewhere that the clarinet has the largest solo repertoire of all woodwinds. Can anyone confirm this? Given its relatively late development, and the fact that pieces composed during the Romantic period were often longer (and presumably took longer to whip off than a Vivaldi concerto), this seems hard to believe. Thanks for replying!

"Largest solo repretoire?" My reaction is, "who cares!" I would think a more valid concern would be "quality", not quantity. However, you are probably correct that due to the clarinets relatively "late" development, there would be a smaller volume of compositions written. For me, it seems that the piano & violin get "all the attention" and I wish the clarinet would get more. But I guess when you are the last guest to arrive at the party, it takes longer to make yourself known........

Well I can't say for sure but I believe it is very possible that the clarinet has the largest volume of solo - chamber wind music for sure. It may be the newest of the woodwind instruments but how many romantic pieces are written for the other winds? For that matter, there are actually many clarinet solo works written in the late classical period by composers that are not famous. Of course I believe the clarinet has become the favorite of the 20th century as well due to it's range and tone color. So I believe it could very well be true, at least amongst the wind family. Probably depends on how obscure you're willing to go and how broad your definition of "repertoire" is. I have two clarinet solo pieces out, but they've only been available for a couple weeks (OK, that was really shameless)... would they be on the list? What about pieces written by every conservatory composition student out there?
