Dear Friends:
I have have just heard of the passing of the great Harry Begian. Many of us knew Harry from his early days in Michigan. I played in his orchestra as a extra at Cass Technical High School, and later knew him at the University of Michigan.
He finished his illustrious career at the University of Illinois, with his Doctorate, as a great conductor of Bands.
Harry was a rare musician/teacher, always giving and a model example of great musicianship and dedication. It is a major loss to all who knew Harry, worked under his guidance, or had the opportunity to be his friend.
Harry Begian will be missed. May his passing be a blessing.

I was lucky enough to play in Begian's Symphonic bands at Illinois in the 1970's. A man of short stature, who commanded our total attention and respect from the moment he set foot in the rehearsal hall. He was incredible at hearing, balancing, and tuning inner voices. And, for one year I sat right under him on 1st clarinet........boy did I learn how to play in tune!
A great, gracious man. Many pieces added to the concert band literature written for him and the Illinois band. Perhaps the most notable being Alfred Reed's Armenian Dances.

He did a two or three part conducting series at TMEA a few years back. I attended the sessions. He had marvelous insight about how to make the music connect with the performers as well as great ideas on score study. I still have the handouts laying around here somewhere. He was a great contributor to his field and will be sorely missed.
