 Lost Cap
Author: musedman

Hating to fumble around with a full mouthpiece cap I bought a cool cap that only covers the first inch or so of the reed. This small plastic, gold plated wonder protects the tip, keeps the reed moist, and is small enough to easily stuff in a shirt or jacket pocket. The problem is....IT'S GONE!!!! I got it somewhere on line, but I can't seem to find it again. Does anyone know where I can buy this handy (and inexpensive) cap? Thanks in advance.

Is it one of these two listed on this page?

Which one has the brighter tone - the silver or gold one?

Chris; it's the black one on sale - it has a darker tone.

I have one of the FF mouthpiece caps since I'm always loosing mines and it fits on every ligature. I once almost lost it in a marching session outside but I found it when I walked a little bit back to search for it. The one thing that I do not like is that it does not cover the whole reed so it dries out fairly quickly. I think that the best cap is just a Rovner,Vandoren(for the leather or String ligatures) or BG and do what Tom Ridenour does. Put some hard pice of paper carton and a electronic tape and cover the cap that is on almost every one of them. One thing I don't like also are the dots on the top of these caps. Doesn't look pretty but it does what it's supposed to do and that is to keep the reed from drying out + of course protecting the mouthpiece and reed.

Why are these caps designed like this ?

Thanks Ron. That's the one. It's the handiest little thing in the world. I highly recommend it. FYI: I had the lost one for over a year and the gold plating looked as good as the day I bought it. Thanks again. Bill

I'd hazard a guess and say that the gold one gives a golden tone?
