I was serching up extended clarinet techniques the other day and on one site it mentioned finger vibrato but it did not have any information, so i'm wondering if anyone can help me on this. Any information will be appreciated.

One way is to use specialized fingerings. Nicola Orioli shows how in his Soliloquio N.80. This is available on free-scores.com at http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=23442# He gives fingerings to use for his short piece illustrating that technique. He also provides a recording so you can hear the results.

Tinwhistle players shake fingers over the tone holes that are at least one hole below the note being played. No reason a clarinet couldn't use that in some way.

I've never tried this technique. Perhaps if I drank about 10 cups of coffee I'd get the gitters and be able to try this.

Seriously, brass players, string instraments, all use this technique. This may be worth experimenting with.

This is a very old idea...goes way back to the ancient aulos and flute.

The technique works, but it's difficult to get practical results on an instrument that has as many keys as a clarinet. For instance, what would I do if I wanted finger vibrato on the first B or the first C above the break (middle of the staff)? I don't have a free finger available over an open hole.

Also, maybe this is a flaw in my own (amateur) technique, but for me, finger vibrato sounds different from breath vibrato. Finger vibrato sounds stronger, less subtle and more assertive, and with finger vibrato, it's harder for me to control the tendency to get a sloppy, "nanny-goat" noise. I don't want to combine the two types of vibrato in one piece of music, and since finger-vibrato is only available for a limited number of notes, I don't use it.
