 Can You Identify These Duets?
Author: agerholm

Hi, I could use some help from some clarinet players:

My dad was a high school band director, and used to give private lessons in our home on Saturday mornings. Dad played the clarinet, and every Saturday I would wake up to hearing clarinet duets. The tunes have stuck in my head for the last 40+ years. Dad passed away a couple of years ago, and I would love to find recordings of these duets. The problem is, I don't know the names of the tunes, or even if they were songs or just exercises. I have listened to many clarinet duets on youtube, but no luck so far in finding them.

The link below is to a page that has 3 short mp3 files of the tunes as I remember them. If you know the names of these tunes, or where I can find a recording of them, please let me know. You can respond to this forum, or there is a contact link on the mp3 page.

Thanks for listening!

Jim

The second one is an arrangement of Weber's Hunting Chorus (I think-I know it's a Weber tune at any rate).

The third one sounds familiar but I can't place it.

And the first I have no idea...sounds Austrian/Bavarian folk-music-ish to me.

If you have a music store with sheet music nearby, see if you can look over a copy of "Selected Duets for Clarinet: Vol. I" (Easy-Medium) by Voxman, published by Rubank. Your three examples are the right length and the right style. I don't have Volume I so I can't check for sure but this book was almost a Bible for many years (still is widely used AFAIK) and your Dad would surely have known about it. (The book is less than $6.)

Maybe someone else on the Board has a copy (GBK?) and can check for you.

I don't know of any recordings available but, if that is the source, you shouldn't have much trouble finding someone to play it so that you can record them. (Heck, if I had the music, I'd find a friend and do it for you.)

Best regards,
jnk

Yes, that's right. It's the Hunters' Chorus from Weber's Der Freischutz.

I looked in my massive library, but couldn't locate it. (20 legal size drawers full).

I used that book in the early-mid 90's! (#1 and 2 for sure, not 3).

I'll search again later.

Wow - you guys are good! Thanks for all the responses! I don't suppose anyone knows where I could find a recording of these?

Also, do you have any idea of the name of the piece by Mozart?

Thanks,
Jim
