 Solo and Ensemble
Author: Amanda Rose

Hey everyone. I'm just writing to talk about everything. I have Solo and Ensemble in March and I am really looking forward to it. This year, my solo is Weber Concerto No. 1 (to any that read my early message, my teacher and I decided on this one). I just started it today, so I'm not really sure what it's going to be like... but it's looking to be a definite challege (what I wanted). My goal is a first at state. Last year, I got a two... but I chipped my front teeth between district and state, so I couldn't play for a really long time.

This year I am doing my first Woodwind Quintet and I think its the first one that anyone has done at my school in a long time. Anyway, it's Beethoven Quintet in Eb. It's originally the Sextet in Eb (Opus 71). It's sooo pretty! Hard too... we have really good players in our quintet, so I think it's going to go to state.

I'm also planning on doing WW Choir, Clarinet Choir, Jazz Ensemble (alto sax), and a clarinet duet.

Any ideas on my pieces or a possible clarinet duet (1st and 2nd players in the school)?

Wow, how is it that you are doing more than 3 events? I'm confused!

I dont know what you can do for a duet, I think we're doing a Bach Inventions piece for clarinet/bass clarinet if we ever get around to ordering it.. but maybe you'll feel less overwhelmed when you hear what i'm doing.... my school is hosting it so i'm going to be really busy the whole day, i'll probably help run a center when i'm not doing anything... I'm doing a bass clarinet solo, clarinet solo, mixed clarinet quintet, sax quartet (playing alto probably), alto sax duet, clarinet duet, clarinet/bass clarinet duet, woodwind choir maybe, maybe a tenor sax duet, and a tenor trio or quartett if i can get everybody to do it and find a piece.... and a tenor or alto solo if i get really ambitious but i dont think i'll have time. And its the week after we get done w/ musical - Fiddler on the Roof - I'm playing the clarinet/bass clarinet part, so thats gonna take a lot of work in itself. I think theres a jazz contest a couple weeks before that, and Jazz Championships (top 15 jazz bands in the state compete for state title - the competition's really intense) a couple weeks after.. not to mention Parade of Bands, and the spring concert... hopefully i'll be done after that... before I pull my hair out from too much stress :)
good luck though, you'll be awesome i'm sure :)

My favorite clarinet duet is an obsure work by a belgium composer called Sonate by Souffriau. It is very difficult to find, and I have lost my copy so if anyone knows where I can get one I would greatly appreciate it. There are 3 Beethoven duets originally written for clarinet and bassoon and a nice Cavellini duet in the Langenus book. All these duets are challenging and fun to play.

Dear Jeanster,
I live in Wisconsin. WSMA says you can do as many things as you want, but you can only do one thing per category. I'd like to do something else, but I don't think I'll have the time because everything gets really smushed together for times. Last year, one of the freshman didn't show up to contest so I had to sight read their clarinet choir music along with them (the student teacher, a clarinet player was the director and had been giving me lessons, so she asked me even though I wasn't the lead at the time). I'm proud to say that I don't think I missed too many notes. :o)

I personally think 3 events is more than enough, having had experiences with one of my kids competing in 3 events (trumpet, trumpet duet, and piano). He filled up the rest of the day making money as an accompanist for others from his HS 8^)

Amanda Rose:

I agree whole heartedly with Mark. If you are going to do your entries well, then be sure that you do not have TOO MANY ENTRIES. As you progress from Local to Region and then on to State the competition becomes much more dificult. Be sure that you can do the entries which you have choses well rather than try to have a large number of entries - especially if you plan to go on beyond the Region to State.

Good Luck in your decision and choices.

Bob Curtis
