Kal was a dear friend and helpful colleague here in NYC. I used his reed tools and learned from his expertise on many occasions.

At a time when work was scarce and I was young, Kal called me to sub for him often. Kal was kind & patient with his students, and tough when he needed to be.

He had more energy than any 4 clarinet players I can think of half his age. A "one of a kind" great man! It was an honor to know him, and work for him and with him. He will be remembered.

May his passing be a blessing.

This year seems to be filled with heavy tidings. I hope the remainder will be a little lighter to the moods...

Even given the limited contact i had with him (saw him in master class many years ago, have read and heard much more over the years) i found him an inspirational man. I often quote him to my students. Very sad to hear this.

I never met the man but had a good deal of admiration from afar.

I use his books for teaching, read his treatise on reed making, and have admired his nurturing of Stoltzman's talent especially for its unorthodox approach.

For the clarinet world, he truly was a Mad Genius, and he will be missed.

I thought he would last forever -- too tough to die. He was a hall of fame player, teacher and personality.

The last time I saw him was at the Weil Hall celebration of his 90th birthday. I congratulated him on reaching a nice round number, and he grabbed my hand in an iron grip and said "I'm going for 100."

Good bye, Kal.

I met him at his master class at ClarinetFest in Vancouver and just started using his Velocity Studies.

At ClarinetFest, he told the player, "That crescendo is not justified, this is not Brahms." Insight that would have never occurred to me.

Though just a snotty-nosed junior high school kid at the time, Mr. Opperman was gracious enough to select a 1966 R13 for me at my teacher's request - and at a price my family could afford as well. So his influence trickled down . . . way down . . . below the elite players of his day.

The Funeral Service for Kal Opperman, was at the Riverside Memorial Chapel in NYC at 11:15 AM this morning.

It was a beautiful and moving Service that honored the Man and all his important work. Kal was blessed to have many of his family, friends and former students all in attendance.

To name just a few of the luminaries:
Ron Odrich
Richard Stoltzman
Larry Guy
Steve Hartman
Dan Block
and many others...

It was wonderful to see so many show up for the Great Kal Opperman!

Chuck Strum, who wrote the Times obituary, told me that he had to cut it by 40% due to space restrictions. However, the full version, with additions, will appear in the upcoming issue of The Clarinet.
