Hello,
It is always a pleasure to coordinate the OU Symposium Young Artists competition, although Leslie and I do that in title only. Angela Carter does the majority of the work. She and her helpers made everything work smoothly. It was great.
We had a record number of entries this year and we invited a record number of finalists.
The Finalists performed part of Carl Vollrath's newly commissioned "Delius' Dream", a wonderful test piece that you should try to find, especially if you have excellent high school or college students. (If you want to find it, I'm sure I can hook you up with the composer or his publisher--he has many other works for clarinet, so it would be fruitful if you could find his entire catalog). The winner performed the entire work on the Saturday noon concert and did a fabulous job.
It is obvious that clarinetting has a bright future and these future professional clarinetists have excellent teachers and very supportive parents.
The finalists, in order of their performance, with their private teachers next to their names are:
Eddie Sundra (David Blumberg)
Keum Yong Lee (Kwanghoon Yi)
John Hong (Janet Dubois)
Jack Sears (Joseph Webb)
Ellen Hong (Albert Hunt)
Anna Darnell (Anthony Taylor)
Mitra Mehvar (Doug Storey)
Morgan Kent (Stephanie Thompson)
Sara Aratake (Donald Oehler)
And the winners were:
3rd Place: Keum Yong Lee
2nd Place: Sara Aratake
1st Place: Anna Darnell
We commission a new composition each year for the winner to premier as part of the prizes. We have lined up Eric Mandat to write a new piece for next year. If you know any great composer that would like to participate, please have them contact me. We have other tentative composers in discussions for future years, but nothing set in stone yet.
Also, if you teach talented high school clarinetists, please encourage them to apply.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make this a reality!
