 bass clarinet pitch tendencies
Author: mwatzke

I am currently working on my masters and am developing a series of warmups that would help young players learn the pitch tendencies of their instrument and how to compensate for them. I have charts for most all of the woodwinds but am in need of one for the bass clarinet. Does anyone know where I might find such a chart? And if one does not exist, can you all help me develop one (I'm a flute player). To help you get an idea of what I'm talking about, here is one I found online: http://magnolia.auhsd.k12.ca.us/ourpages/auto/2006/9/8/1157694206750/Woodwind_Pitch_Tendency.pdf

Thank you in advance for your help!!!

Every instrument will have different pitch tendancies, and every player will play differently.

You could try books such as The bass clarinettist of the 21st century by E. Michael Richards, New directions for clarinet by Phillip Rehfeldt or Intonation training for clarinettists by Larry Guy. Can't remember if the last two have sections on the Bass clarinet though.

You can usually bet on the 'long' low clarion B and C being sharp on just about every bass clarinet; but other than that, each instrument is different as 2E writes.

I have found that even more than the Bb -A clarinets different bass clarinets have different tendencies especially from one manufacture to another. Most have improved a great deal over the years as well so it depends also on the model of the instrument. Especially the break notes, the low E to low C on the extended basses and the bass clarinet altissimo registers. Sorry I can't be more specific. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
