 My new-to-me clarinet
Author: beantown_Bb

This weekend I found a K239xx E&S Master Model on craigslist for $350. It's in good shape, and I am in love.

I am just a hobbyist and I have two babies, so I can't justify spending in the 4 digits on a new horn. I love what I have found instead.

Congratulations!
Needn't always be a four-figure-treat, the key is finding the "it's good enough" gear. The thusly saved money is often better spent on some kind of initiation (read: teacher). (hint! hint!)

Have fun! Music is a very rewarding hobby with a considerable addictive potential. :-)

Yes, it's great.

I have played since I was about 8 years old but with a break after college when I didn't have a group to play with, so all in all nearly 30 years.

It's mommy's night out from the kids once a week. :D

That in itself is priceless.

congrats!

I do think that you can consider working on the best mouthpiece and reed setup for yourself when you have the time. This one quest is in itself never-ending... never mind all the other things to consider with things clarinet.

I'm still using my M13Lyre + reeds I had from my Evette MM that i've been playing till now but which has gotten a little too battle scarred to be very reliable anymore even after an overhaul

If I don't like the M13L on the E&S, I will try some other options (any suggestions?)

Walter Grabner and Gregory Smith make excellent handcrafted mouthpieces. They are sponsors of this board. Look to the mouthpieces link on the right of the page.

Well, speaking of reeds, I am investigating the potentials of Forestone upon the recommendation of Gene Ramsbottom of UBC. Currently I run on Legere Ontario/Quebec 2.5 on a Genussa Redwine mostly, with a Rovner ligature.

Hello there, Beantown Bb, glad you found a clarinet that you're happy with. If you're close enough, check out our band: SMCCB.com, in Medway. Happy playing!

Congrats! Play the heck out of it and enjoy making some music. Most importantly, keep this site bookmarked (or if you're like me, as your homepage). Lots of valuable information, lots of varied and informative opinions, and lots of things to learn or try come from here. And I'm a better player because of it.

Congrats on your new instrument, Beantown. Some of the most satisfying instruments I've owned are the ones that cost little or nothing to acquire--leaving me with the funds to get them overhauled into prime condition.

May your new horn serve you long and well.

Congratulations on your "new" instrument. I just got a "new" instrument too. But not a clarinet, it's an oboe. I have played clarinet for 41 years and just recently decided to learn oboe. It has been a very smooth transition. After only 4 private lessons, my instructor is quite pleased with my progress. I brought my new toy for her to see on Tuesday night. She was "tickled pink" to the point she was almost speechless! Enjoy your new-to-you instrument. Make a joyful noise with it! Paula
