 brass band in Corelli's Mandolin

just saw this movie first time Saturday night... enjoyed the movie, and many of the music scenes.

There is one scene where the Italians are hosting a dance in the town square, and Penelope Cruz does a Tango (I think... not a dance expert, and i realize the Tango is from Argentina and the movie is set in Greece, so would it have been a tango? it looked similar to me anyway) with an Italian soldier.

I loved the music for that dance. The band consisted of mostly brass, but a clarinet or two as well it seemed.

Just wandering if there is a particular name for this type of ensemble/music, and if this type of music still has an active 'scene' anywhere? I just love it, but it certainly is not something you hear much.

I haven't seen the movie but there are plenty of Balkan brass bands around. There's one in NYC comprised of Americans, called Zlatne Uste (website: http://www.zlatneuste.org} and one in San Francisco, called Brass Menazeri (website: http://brass.menazeri.com/).

Plus there are tons in the Balkans:

Karandila
Boban Markovic
Fanfare Ciocarlia
Kocani Orkestar

And those are the only ones who have a lot of records out overseas! :)

Hopefully these are similar to the scene in the movie! :)

Okey dokey...I listened to a little bit of that link and while the instrumentation may be similar to the Balkan Bands I listed above, the tune itself is not. Which is not to say that the bands I listed above _never_ play outside their genre (One band actually has a really fun cover of "Born to Be Wild"), but the gypsy bands are a little more wild than your example.

Primarily when you hear brass band music in the Balkans it comes from a Turkish/Ottoman Military Band source, altered by the "natives" and by the Romany/gypsy musicians to express themselves...

But yes, definitely a different style...
