 Wells Chicago B2 mouthpiece
Author: golfnclarinet

I was in local repairman's shop and found this mpc in his drawer.
He's asking $60.
I took it for trial and tried it today.

WOW!!

This piece sounds sweet and mellow with Gonzalez RC 3.75 and solid, centered still warm with FOF 3.75.

I'm gonna send him a check.

This mpc is in excellent shape, looks original facing with very weird window.

Who cares as long as it sounds great.

Lucky day!!

Good find! They're hard to come by. They do have funny looking windows, but they play very well.

I just sold one exactly like that for $125 not too long ago.
They are hard to find, especially in original condition!
You got a good deal.

Dear Frank,

What is SWS? His name was Frank Wells.

I owned one way back when, in college.
A fine mouthpiece indeed.

I used one that I bought from Leon Russianoff in my last year in school and played it for many years. I first bought one from a fellow student and dropped it the day of a dress rehearsal. Russianoff was using the same type at the time because he asked me to try it several months before but I didn't like it at the time, go figure. I called him in a panic and asked him if I could borrow his for the concert. Of course he let me use it and let me keep it if I wanted so I bought it from him a few months later. Several years later my dog chewed it up, good thing she ran faster than I could. I was able to replace it because I alway had a second on hand once I found a MP I liked. I still have that final one I used but eventually switched to another type of MP. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Ah, got it GBK!

But I believe the odd windows (keyhole shaped) were only of the Frank Wells Chicago studio.

I visited at the height of the keyhole window period, and he was even experimenting with trumpet mouthpieces that had ovate holes leading into the shank. Frank was WAY ahead of his time.

I have a Wells B2, came with a used R13 I bought around 1972 in the Chicago area. I played it for awhile, finding it very responsive and even. Teachers pushed me onto other mpc's later, however.

About 15 years ago I revisited the Wells, and loved the sound, but felt it needed refacing as the tip was kind of ragged and tonguing response seemed to be affected. I sent it to a noted Chicago area technician for refacing. When returned, it was absolutely UNPLAYABLE! I was distraught, but during the period it was away, I moved onto a Behn mpc (and now a Greg Smith). Lucky we have so many great choices these days.

I still have the Wells, but unsure what to do with it.

I had a chance to play this mpc at church last Sunday.
I'm falling in love with this piece.

Anybody out there play this mpc as main?
Which modern mpc is close to this piece in tone and feeling?

I play a Stowell-Wells-Schneider B3 and alternate between it and a Vandoren B46. I like both.

Golfnclarinet,

I have several B2 and have successfully alternated between Portnoy BP02 and VD B45. I do not know exactly how the measurements (tip opening and facing) compare but being able to use some of the same reeds tells there is some similarity.

FWIW With all these MP, there is a lot of volume.
