LeBlanc Eb soprano clarinet to fix
Author: shanewp

Hi everyone:
I would like to purchase an older grenadilla soprano Eb clarinet ( no cracks and all the keys) that I could fix and use. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Shane

I've seen an occasional Eb for parts. Maybe you can pick up a few and make 1. I've seen these on ebay.

Many, many years ago, I jumped from contra (in the West Point Band) to Eb (in the U. of Tennessee Band, subbing in the Knoxville Symphony).

I played the UT Band's Leblanc LL Eb, which I found to be extremely sharp and out of tune. For my home-made solution, and the full story, read http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=262303&t=262226.

Dear Ken:
Thank you I will print it off. I have all the other clarinets and I play the contrabass in a concert band. However my first instrument is the Bb soprano clarinet.
I am presently fixing up an alto clarinet and I thought a soprano Eb instrument would round out the collection.
Cheers

I found a lovely 1962 Buffet R13 Eb on eBay. It was in a pretty bad way to begin with having a cracked barrel and bell and the keys were unplated and heavily tarnished.

I set to work to turn it around including filing, papering up and polishing all the keys and metal parts to remove deep pitting and scratches, had the lot silver plated and rebuilt it with cork pads almost throughout and it's a fantastic instrument. Made my Vito Eb sound like a toy in comparison.

Likewise with my Selmer Bb and A clarinets - bought them off eBay most were in a state of disrepair so I rebuilt them and use them as my main instruments. So it's always good to keep an eye out for an older instrument so long as it can be resurrected. Even better still if you have the means to do this kind of work yourself.

Does anyone know anything about older grenadilla Conn Eb soprano clarinets? Are they worth fixing??
Thanks

Be on the lookout for a trashed Vito Eb - you should be able to adapt the keywork from that to fit a Leblanc body.
